What is a Pak® Lenticular Filter?

The ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridge is a modular depth filter designed to fit inside a totally enclosed housing. The design conceptualizes a “stack of lenses” (hence lenticular), where individual cells are composed of depth filter media sheets sealed together. This format combines the high filtration surface area of a plate and frame press with the convenience and leak-proof security of a cartridge system.

The modules utilize a variety of media formulations, including the renowned Micro-Media® (cellulose/perlite/DE), AlphaMedia™ (pure cellulose), and MicroClear® (immobilized carbon), to target specific contaminants such as haze, waxes, lipids, or off-odors.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Closed System Design: Unlike open plate and frame filters, lenticular modules operate inside a sealed housing, preventing product loss and eliminating exposure to the atmosphere. This is critical for sanitary applications and solvents.
  • High Solids Loading: The depth media matrix traps particles throughout the thickness of the pad, not just on the surface, allowing for longer service life and higher throughput.
  • Scalability: Available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters with varying cell counts (up to 18 cells), enabling linear scale-up from pilot to production.
  • Rapid Change-Out: Modules can be replaced in minutes, reducing downtime and labor costs significantly compared to restacking a filter press.

Available Media Grades

Choosing the correct media is vital for achieving your target filtrate quality. Purecowater can assist in testing and selecting the optimal grade for your stream.

Series Composition Target Application
Zeta-Pak® (Micro-Media) Cellulose & Diatomaceous Earth (DE) General clarification, haze removal, botanical extracts (wax/lipid removal).
Bio-Pak® Highly refined cellulose & DE Pharmaceuticals, biologicals, and high-purity chemicals. Low extractables.
Disc-Pak® (MicroClear) Immobilized Activated Carbon Color correction, odor removal, and decolorization without loose carbon dust.
AquaKv-Pak® Specialized Absorptive Media Transformer oil filtration (removal of water and carbon deposits).

Common Applications

Because of their versatility, ErtelAlsop Pak filters are used across a wide spectrum of industries:

  • Botanical Extraction: Efficiently removes waxes, lipids, and fine particulates from ethanol or hydrocarbon extracts.
  • Food & Beverage: Clarification of mixing syrups, distilled spirits, wine, and flavorings.
  • Pharmaceuticals: filtration of API solvents and removal of precious metal catalysts.
  • Electric Utility: Reconditioning of insulating oil in transformers and switchgear.
  • Chemical Processing: Polishing of specialty chemicals and silicone production.
