ErtelAlsop Pak Lenticular Filters

Advanced Depth Filtration for Industrial Applications

For industries requiring rigorous solid-liquid separation, the ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filter represents a significant evolution in depth filtration technology. As a distributor for top-tier filtration solutions, Purecowater provides these modules to help facilities transition from labor-intensive plate and frame systems to cleaner, more efficient enclosed filtration.

The Pak® Lenticular Cartridges (also known as modules) are designed to provide high solids loading capacity and superior retention of ultra-fine particles. Whether you are processing botanical extracts, distilled spirits, or pharmaceuticals, these filters offer a scalable, leak-free solution.

What is a Lenticular Filter?

A lenticular filter module consists of stacked depth filter cells—typically utilizing Micro-Media® or AlphaMedia®—assembled into a single cartridge unit. The design resembles a stack of double convex lenses (hence “lenticular”).

Unlike surface filters that only trap particles on the top layer, these depth filters utilize a tortuous path through a complex matrix of cellulose fibers and filter aids (such as Diatomaceous Earth). This structure allows the filter to retain particles throughout the entire thickness of the media, significantly increasing the dirt-holding capacity and lifespan of the filter.

Note on Design: The edges of the filter modules are sealed using a patented polypropylene process, ensuring structural integrity and preventing bypass.

Key Benefits Over Plate & Frame Filters

Historically, plate and frame filters were the standard for depth filtration. However, they are often associated with leakage, product loss, and labor-intensive changeouts. The ErtelAlsop Pak® system solves these issues through an enclosed design.

  • Zero Leakage: The enclosed housing prevents external contamination and product loss (drip-free).
  • Rapid Changeout: Modules can be replaced in a fraction of the time it takes to dress a plate and frame press.
  • Operator Safety: Minimizes exposure to fluids and vapors.
  • Scalability: Available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters with varying cell counts to match flow rate requirements.

Technical Specifications

The versatility of the Pak® cartridges lies in their varied configurations. Below is a breakdown of the standard specifications available for industrial applications.

Feature Specification Details

Diameters Available 12 inch (30.5 cm) & 16 inch (40.6 cm)
End Configurations Flat Gasket, Double O-Ring
Gasket Material EPDM (Standard), others available upon request
Core Material Polypropylene
Media Types Micro-Media® (w/ DE), AlphaMedia® (Pure Cellulose), MicroClear® (Carbon)

Primary Applications

Due to their high flow rates and Zeta potential (electrokinetic attraction), these filters are effective across a wide range of industries.

1. Botanical Extraction

In the processing of botanical extracts, removing waxes and lipids is critical for product clarity. The Pak® modules containing Diatomaceous Earth (DE) are particularly effective here. The high surface area allows for rapid processing of ethanol or hydrocarbon-based slurries while the DE captures the fine lipid particulates.

2. Food & Beverage

From distilled spirits to sugar syrups, ensuring a haze-free product is essential. Lenticular modules polish liquids without affecting odor or taste, making them ideal for final filtration steps before bottling.

3. Chemical & Pharmaceutical

The enclosed nature of the Pak® system makes it suitable for filtering hazardous chemicals or high-value pharmaceutical ingredients where hygiene and containment are paramount.

Choosing the Right Configuration

When selecting a module yourself or with our team, consider the End Cap Configuration. The two most common types are:

  • Flat Gasket: Provides a seal via compression between the housing top and bottom.
  • Double O-Ring: Offers a secure, positive seal that fits into a receiver in the housing, reducing the risk of bypass even further.

If you are currently using a plate and frame filter or an open filtration system, transitioning to ErtelAlsop Lenticular Paks can streamline your production line, reduce downtime, and improve product consistency.
