Advanced Carbon Depth Filtration for Color and Odor Removal
For industries requiring precision in liquid filtration, removing particulate matter is often only half the battle. Many applications in food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and chemical processing also demand the removal of organic contaminants, colors, and odors. The ErtelAlsop Micro-Clear™ Adsorptive Media represents the pinnacle of activated carbon depth filtration, offering a cleaner, more efficient alternative to loose carbon powder.
Purecowater is proud to supply ErtelAlsop solutions, helping our clients tackle complex solid and liquid filtration challenges with high-performance media designed for critical applications.
What is Micro-Clear™ Adsorptive Filter Media?
Micro-Clear™ is a premium depth filter media composed of cellulose pulp, a wet-strength resin, and highly specialized activated carbon. Unlike traditional methods that require the messy addition of loose carbon powder to a mixing tank, Micro-Clear™ immobilizes the carbon within the filter matrix.

This “Triple-Action” media performs three critical functions simultaneously:
- Controlled Filtration: Removes microns-sized particles via mechanical capture and electrokinetic adsorption (zeta potential).
- Decolorization: Adsorbs color pigments and organic compounds.
- Deodorization: Removes unwanted odors and flavor taints.
Key Benefits and Features
Switching to Micro-Clear™ media eliminates the need for dumping bags of activated carbon powder, which creates airborne dust and necessitates extensive equipment cleanup. The immobilized carbon format ensures that the adsorptive surface area is utilized efficiently while preventing carbon bleed-through into the filtrate.
- High Adsorption Efficiency: The media utilizes activated carbon with surface areas ranging from 500–2000 m²/g, effectively trapping organic molecules in internal pores.
- Zeta Potential: The wet-strength resin imparts a positive charge to the media, allowing it to attract and hold negatively charged particles smaller than the nominal micron rating.
- Variety of Carbon Grades: Available with standard carbons (like S51) or specialized grades (CGP Super, G60) to target specific molecules.
- Scalability: Available in various distinct sizes, from lab-scale discs to 400mm x 400mm sheets and lenticular modules.
Product Specifications and Grades
Selecting the right grade of Micro-Clear™ depends on the specific retention needs and the viscosity of the liquid being filtered. The table below outlines the common grades available.
| Grade | Nominal Retention | Carbon Type | Typical Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| MC-35 | 5.0 µm | S-51 | General Haze & Color Removal |
| MC-55 | 1.0 µm | S-51 | Fine Polishing & Decolorization |
| MC-70 | 0.45 µm | S-51 | Microbial Reduction & Adsorption |
| MC-35C | 5.0 µm | CGP Super | High Efficiency Color Adsorption |
Note: Retention ratings are nominal. Specialized carbon grades such as G60 are also available upon request.
Common Applications
The versatility of Micro-Clear™ media makes it a standard choice across several high-purity industries:
Food & Beverage
Used for color correction in spirits (vodka, gin), flavor refinement in wines, and haze removal in gelatin and fruit juices.
Pharmaceuticals
Ideal for purification of APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), enzyme solutions, and antibiotic production.
Cosmetics & Chemicals
Essential for clarifying fragrances, essential oils, and silicone fluids, as well as organic acid purification.
Flow Rates and Operational Data
Operational efficiency is key for OEM and large-scale distribution. Below are the approximate flow rates for clean water at 10 psi (at 70°F). Actual rates will vary based on viscosity and solids loading.
- MC-35: ~750 Gal/ft²/hour
- MC-55: ~225 Gal/ft²/hour
- MC-70: ~100 Gal/ft²/hour
