Advanced Depth Filtration Solutions
At Purecowater, we understand that achieving superior liquid purity requires robust and reliable filtration media. We are proud to offer ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filters, a premium depth filtration solution designed to meet the rigorous demands of pharmaceutical, food and beverage, chemical, and cosmetic applications.
The ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridge—also known as a lenticular filter module—combines the proven efficiency of depth filter sheets with the convenience of an enclosed, modular cartridge design. Originally invented by Alsop Engineering in the 1940s, this technology has evolved into the industry standard for enclosed depth filtration.
Key Benefit: Lenticular modules offer the high solids-loading capacity of plate and frame filters but in a sealed, hygienic, and easy-to-change format.
How ErtelAlsop Lenticular Technology Works
The “Lenticular” design is ingenious in its simplicity and efficiency. The cartridge is assembled from varying numbers of stacked filter cells (typically between 5 and 18 cells). Each cell is constructed from a pair of depth filter media sheets (such as MicroMedia® or AlphaMedia®) with their edges sealed using a patented polypropylene process.
The result resembles a stack of double convex lenses. Liquid flows from the outside of the cartridge, through the depth media, and into the central core. This design maximizes surface area and flow rates while maintaining a compact footprint.
Three Primary Media Formats
Depending on your application, ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridges are available in distinct media formulations:
- Zeta-Pak® (MicroMedia®): The “workhorse” of the industry. These modules utilize cellulose and filter aids (like Diatomaceous Earth) to provide a tortuous path for particulate removal. They offer high zeta potential, making them exceptional for retaining ultra-fine particles and haze.
- Disc-Pak® (AlphaMedia®): Constructed from 100% cellulose without inorganic filter aids (no DE or Perlite). These are ideal for applications like essential oils, spirits, or dielectric oils where you need to preserve the integrity of active ingredients without imparting trace minerals.
- Bio-Pak®: Specifically designed for pharmaceutical and biological applications requiring low extractables and high purity.

Performance Advantages
1. High Solids Loading
Unlike surface filters (pleated membranes) that blind quickly when faced with high solid loads, depth filters utilize their thickness to trap particles throughout the media matrix. This enables the ErtelAlsop Pak® to handle heavy particulate loads, hazes, and lipids without premature fouling.
2. Leak-Free Filtration
Traditional plate and frame presses are notorious for edge leakage and product loss. The Pak® Lenticular system places the media inside a sealed pressure vessel (housing). This results in zero external leakage, protecting your operators and your valuable product.
3. Rapid Change-Outs
Changing a plate and frame filter can take hours of labor. Changing a lenticular module takes minutes. Operators simply open the housing, remove the spent stack, and load a new Pak® cartridge. This significantly reduces downtime and labor costs.
Applications
These filters are versatile and widely used across various industries handled by Purecowater:
- Distilled Spirits & Wine: Removal of haze, chill filtration, and polishing.
- Botanical Extracts: Removal of waxes, lipids, and plant matter (especially effective with DE-containing media).
- Pharmaceuticals: Clarification of broths and syrups.
- Chemicals & Oils: Filtration of lubricating oils, transformer oils, and process chemicals.
- Fragrances & Cosmetics: Polishing perfumes and colognes without affecting the scent profile (using AlphaMedia).
Housing Compatibility
ErtelAlsop Pak® Cartridges are designed to fit into standard lenticular housings. They are available in 12″ and 16″ diameters. For optimal performance, Purecowater recommends using these cartridges with properly sized vertical or horizontal housings that feature sanitary or industrial designs.
