ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filters

Advanced Depth Filtration with ErtelAlsop Pak® Technology

For industries requiring high-purity liquid filtration, the ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filter represents a significant evolution in depth filtration technology. Available through Purecowater, these lenticular cartridges (also known as modules) offer a superior alternative to traditional plate and frame filters, providing a totally enclosed, sanitary, and easy-to-handle solution for complex filtration challenges.

Whether you are processing pharmaceuticals, distilled spirits, cosmetics, or industrial fluids, the Pak® design combines precision particle retention with high solids loading capacity.

What is a Lenticular Filter?

The “Lenticular” design refers to a stack of depth filter cells that resemble double convex lenses. The ErtelAlsop Pak® is assembled from varying numbers of these cells—typically ranging from 5 to 16 stacked units—bonded together to form a single, robust cartridge.

Each cell consists of a pair of depth filter media sheets (such as MicroMedia®, AlphaMedia®, or MicroClear®) with edges sealed continuously using a patented polypropylene process. This construction eliminates the leakage often associated with loose filter sheets and allows for installation inside a sealed housing.

Key Benefits Over Plate & Frame Filters

While plate and frame filters have been the standard for decades, the Lenticular Pak® offers distinct advantages for modern manufacturing:

  • Enclosed System: Prevents exposure to the atmosphere and eliminates leakage/dripping, crucial for toxic, hazardous, or high-value fluids.
  • Quick Change-Outs: Replacing a module takes a fraction of the time required to strip and dress a plate and frame press.
  • Scalability: Available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters to fit various housing sizes.
  • Structural Integrity: The polypropylene core and supports ensure the cartridge withstands pressure differentials without collapsing.

Media Technologies and Configurations

ErtelAlsop offers a variety of media compositions to target specific contaminants. The filtration mechanism relies on a complex matrix of fibers that trap particles not just on the surface, but throughout the depth of the media.

Zeta-Pak® (The Workhorse)

The Zeta-Pak® incorporates Zeta Potential—an electrokinetic charge that attracts and holds ultra-fine particles smaller than the mechanical pore size of the media. This is ideal for removing haze, bacteria, and endotoxins.

Disc-Pak®

Constructed with 100% cellulose AlphaMedia®, Disc-Pak is perfect for applications where Diatomaceous Earth (DE) or Perlite cannot be used, such as dielectric oils or certain pharmaceutical grades.

Technical Specifications

When selecting a Pak® cartridge, compatibility and micron rating are paramount. Below is a summary of the standard specifications available via Purecowater.

Cell Count Typically 5 to 16 cells per module
Core Material Polypropylene (Standard)
Gasket Materials EPDM, Silicone, Viton, Buna-N
Media Types Cellulose, Diatomaceous Earth (DE), Perlite, Carbon

Common Applications

The versatility of the Pak® line makes it a staple across several sectors:

  • Food & Beverage: Polishing filtration for syrups, distilled spirits, wine, and beer. Removes haze and yeast.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) purification, removal of carbon fines, and lipid removal in botanical extracts.
  • Chemicals: Clarification of solvents, inks, paints, and resins.
  • Utilities: Filtration of dielectric oils for transformers and turbines.
  • Cosmetics: Clarification of perfumes, lotions, and essential oils.

Housing Compatibility

The ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridges are designed to fit into standard lenticular housings. ErtelAlsop housings utilize a “Lock and Load” system for horizontal or vertical mounting, simplifying the loading process. The cartridges are available with Flat Gasket ends (standard) or Double O-Ring ends (for critical sealing).
