Advanced Depth Filtration with ErtelAlsop Pak® Cartridges
For industries requiring high-efficiency solids removal without the leaks and labor intensity of traditional methods, ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filters provide a superior solution. As a distributor and OEM for industry-leading filtration brands, Purecowater is proud to offer these advanced depth filter modules to tackle your toughest liquid filtration challenges.
The Pak® system (also known as lenticular filter modules) evolved from the original plate and frame technology invented by Alsop Engineering. By packaging depth filter media into a sealed, stacked cartridge format, users gain the retention capabilities of depth sheets with the convenience of a totally enclosed, leak-free housing.
What is a Lenticular Filter?
Lenticular filters, or “modules,” typically consist of varying numbers of lens-shaped filter cells stacked on a central core. Each cell is comprised of a pair of depth filter media sheets (such as MicroMedia® or AlphaMedia®) with edges sealed by a patented polypropylene process.
This design resembles a stack of double convex lenses—hence the term "lenticular." The fluid flows from the outside of the cartridge, through the media, and into the center core, effectively trapping particulates within the complex matrix of fibers.
Key Features & Benefits
- Enclosed System: Eliminates leakage and external contamination common with plate and frame presses.
- High Solids Loading: The depth media matrix captures more particles than surface filters, extending service life.
- Scalability: Available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters with cell counts ranging from 5 to 18 cells per module.
- Rapid Change-out: Modules can be replaced in minutes compared to the hours required for plate and frame presses.
- Versatile Media: Compatible with various media grades for pharmaceutical, food & beverage, and industrial applications.
Product Variants: Selecting the Right Pak®
ErtelAlsop offers specific formulations to match fluid viscosity and chemical compatibility. Below are the primary series available through Purecowater:
| Series | Composition | Best Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Zeta-Pak® | Cellulose + Diatomaceous Earth (DE) / Perlite | Biopharma, Spirits, botanical extracts. Provides high zeta potential for ultra-fine particle retention. |
| Disc-Pak® | 100% Cellulose (AlphaMedia®) | Lubricating oils, dielectric oils, syrups, and perfumes where DE/mineral integration is not desired. |
| Bio-Pak® | High-purity Cellulose + Filter Aids | Critical pharmaceutical and biological applications requiring low extractables. |
Technical Specifications
When specifying a system for your facility, consider the following technical parameters. The modules are designed to fit into standard lenticular housings (available in vertical or horizontal "Lock and Load" orientations).
| Diameters Available | 12 inch (30.5 cm) & 16 inch (40.6 cm) |
| Micron Ratings (Nominal) | 0.25 µm to 15 µm |
| Core Material | Polypropylene (Standard) |
| Gasket Materials | EPDM, Silicone, Nitrile, Viton, Teflon Encapsulated |
| End Cap Configurations | Flat Gasket (Standard) or Double O-Ring (plug-in) |
| Max Operating Temp | Dependent on media selection and gasket material (typically up to 180°F for polypropylene cores) |

Why Choose Pak® Filters?
The Disc-Pak® and Zeta-Pak® cartridges are particularly effective because they combine mechanical screening with electrokinetic adsorption (zeta potential). This dual action allows them to remove charged particles, such as haze-forming proteins or colloids, that might be smaller than the micron rating of the filter.
