What is a Lenticular Filter?

ErtelAlsop invented the lenticular format in the 1940s, revolutionizing depth filtration. A “Pak” cartridge consists of individual filtration cells stacked on a central core. Each cell is made of a pair of depth filter media discs—such as MicroMedia® or AlphaMedia®—sealed at the edges. This creates a unit that resembles a stack of double convex lenses, hence the name “lenticular.”

Unlike open plate and frame filters, lenticular cartridges operate inside a sealed housing. This design eliminates edge leakage, reduces fluid loss, and prevents external contamination, making it ideal for sanitary applications and hazardous fluids.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Enclosed System: Prevents exposure to the atmosphere and eliminates leakage associated with plate and frame presses.
  • Rapid Change-Out: Modules can be replaced in minutes rather than hours, significantly reducing downtime.
  • Scalability: Available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters with varying cell counts (5 to 18 cells) to match process flow rates.
  • Variety of Media: Compatible with cellulose, diatomaceous earth (DE), perlite, and activated carbon media options.
  • High Solids Loading: The depth media structure traps particles throughout the matrix, offering high retention capacity before fouling.

Filter Media Options

ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridges are versatile due to the wide range of media grades available. Choosing the right media is critical for optimizing throughput and retention.

Media Series Composition Primary Application
AlphaMedia™ 100% Cellulose Ideal for applications requiring no DE or Perlite. Used in dielectric oils, syrups, and perfumes.
MicroMedia® Cellulose / DE / Perlite / Resin High-performance depth filtration for haze removal and sub-micron retention. Excellent for beverages and biologics.
MicroClear® Activated Carbon / Cellulose Adsorptive filtration for removing color, odor, and impurities without handling loose carbon powder.
