ErtelAlsop Pak Lenticular Filters: High-Performance Depth Filtration Solutions

Revolutionizing Depth Filtration with ErtelAlsop Pak® Technology

For industries requiring high-solids loading capacity and precision retention, ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filters represent a significant advancement over traditional plate and frame filtration methods. These depth filter modules, commonly referred to as lenticular cartridges, combine the filtration efficiency of depth media with the ease of use of a closed cartridge system.

At Purecowater, we supply the full range of ErtelAlsop Pak® configurations to tackle complex liquid filtration challenges. Whether you are filtering botanical extracts, pharmaceuticals, distilled spirits, or industrial oils, these modules offer a leak-free, hygienic, and labor-saving solution.

What Are Lenticular Filter Modules?

A Lenticular Pak® is essentially a stack of depth filter cells combined into a single, cohesive unit. The design resembles a stack of double convex lenses (hence “lenticular”). Each cell is constructed from two sheets of depth filter media (such as MicroMedia® or AlphaMedia®) sealed at the edges using a patented polypropylene molding process.

This design allows the fluid to flow from the outside of the cartridge, through the media, and into the center core, effectively trapping particulates within the depth of the media matrix.

Key Benefits Over Plate & Frame Filters

While plate and frame filters have been the industry standard for decades, lenticular modules offer distinct advantages:

  • Closed System: The filtration occurs inside a sealed housing, preventing liquid loss and protecting operators from exposure to process fluids or fumes.
  • Rapid Changeout: Replacing a stack of modules takes a fraction of the time required to dress a plate and frame press, significantly reducing downtime.
  • Scalability: With sizes available in 12-inch and 16-inch diameters with varying cell counts, systems can be scaled easily to meet flow rate demands.

Product Families and Media Types

ErtelAlsop offers distinct product lines within the Pak® family to suit specific chemical compatibility and filtration goals.

Zeta-Pak® (MicroMedia®)

The Zeta-Pak® is often considered the workhorse of the lenticular line. It utilizes MicroMedia® filter sheets which incorporate cellulose, high-purity diatomaceous earth (DE), and a wet-strength resin. This composition provides a high positive zeta potential, allowing the filter to electrokinetically attract negatively charged sub-micron particles, ensuring superior retention efficiency.

  • Best For: Haze removal in beverages, biopharmaceutical reduction, removal of fine particulates.
  • Micron Ratings: 0.25 µm to 15 µm (Nominal).

Disc-Pak® (AlphaMedia®)

Disc-Pak® cartridges are manufactured using AlphaMedia®, a 100% cellulose material. Unlike the Zeta-Pak, these contain no inorganic filter aids (like DE or Perlite). This makes them ideal for applications where the leaching of mineral components is a concern or where the smooth texture of pure cellulose is required.

  • Best For: Dielectric oils, perfumes, syrups, and applications requiring low extractables.
  • Micron Ratings: 1 µm, 5 µm, 10 µm (Nominal).

Primary Applications

The versatility of the ErtelAlsop Pak® allows it to act as a primary clarifier or a pre-filter for membrane protection in numerous industries:

Industry Common Use Cases
Food & Beverage Clarification of wine, beer, spirits, corn syrup, and sugar solutions. Removal of haze and yeast.
Pharmaceuticals Filtration of APIs, blood fractionation, cell harvesting, and sterile pre-filtration.
Cosmetics Leaf and root extract filtration, perfume clarification, and essential oil purification.
Industrial & Chemical Polishing of dielectric oils, varnishes, coolants, and wastewater.

Integration with Filter Housings

ErtelAlsop Pak® cartridges are designed to fit into universal lenticular housings. Purecowater can assist in specifying the correct housing orientation for your facility:

  • Vertical Housings: The standard for most sanitary and industrial applications. Small footprint and easy venting.
  • Horizontal Housings: Ideal for multi-cartridge systems. The horizontal orientation allows for safer, waist-level loading (“Lock and Load” system) and eliminates the need for overhead hoists during maintenance.
