What is a Lenticular Filter?

The ErtelAlsop Pak® Lenticular Filter is a depth filtration cartridge designed to combine the superior filtration characteristics of filter sheets with the convenience of a cartridge format. Originally invented by Alsop Engineering, this technology utilizes an accordion-like stack of lenticular cells. Each cell consists of two discs of depth media (Micro-Media®) sealed around a polypropylene core.

Unlike surface filters that trap particles only on the outer layer, these depth filters utilize a tortuous path through a complex matrix of cellulose, wet-strength resin, and filter aids (such as Diatomaceous Earth or Perlite). This allows them to retain particles throughout the entire thickness of the media, resulting in high solids loading capacity and exceptional filtrate clarity.

Key Advantages

  • Eliminates Leakage: The fully enclosed housing design ensures zero leakage, protecting operators from hazardous fluids and preventing product loss/oxidation.
  • Rapid Change-out: Modules can be replaced in a fraction of the time required to dress a standard plate and frame press.
  • Scalability: Housings can accommodate multiple stacked modules, allowing for vertical scalability with a minimal footprint.
  • Zeta Potential: The media exhibits a positive electrokinetic charge (Zeta Potential), attracting and holding negatively charged ultra-fine particles smaller than the mechanical micron rating.

Lenticular vs. Plate & Frame Press

Many facilities are upgrading from open plate and frame presses to lenticular systems. The following comparison highlights why the ErtelAlsop Pak® provides a better operational experience.

Feature Pak® Lenticular System Plate & Frame Press
System Setup Enclosed, Sanitary Housing Open Frame (Drip Pan Required)
Change-out Time Minutes (Modular Cartridges) Hours (Individual Sheets)
Product Loss Minimal (Housing Volume Only) Moderate to High (Edge Leakage)
Fume Exposure None (Closed Loop) High (Open Atmosphere)

Applications

Because they combine high flow rates with the ability to remove haze and fine particulates, ErtelAlsop Pak® filters are the “workhorse” in many sectors:

  • Pharmaceuticals: API processing, large volume parenterals (LVPs), and solvent clarification.
  • Botanical Extracts: Removal of waxes, lipids, and color (using Carbon-impregnated media) for CBD/cannabis and herbal oils.
  • Food & Beverage: Distilled spirits polishing, syrup clarification, and haze removal in wines and vinegars.
  • Chemicals & Utilities: Transformer oil filtration (dielectric fluids), silicone processing, and specialty chemical manufacturing.
