Introduction to High-Performance Depth Filtration

In the world of critical liquid filtration, consistency and efficiency are paramount. At Purecowater, we understand that achieving optimal clarity and purity requires superior media. This is why we are proud to distribute ErtelAlsop Micro-Media® Filter Sheets. Designed for demanding applications in pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and industrial processing, Micro-Media® offers a robust solution for capturing solids and haze that standard media often miss.

What is ErtelAlsop Micro-Media®?

The Micro-Media® Series is a premium line of depth filter sheets. Unlike surface filtration which only catches particles on the top layer, depth filtration utilizes a thick matrix to trap contaminants throughout the media. ErtelAlsop customizes these sheets using a precise blend of:

  • Cellulose Fibers: The structural backbone of the sheet.
  • Filter Aids: High-grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and/or Perlite to increase surface area and porosity.
  • Wet Strength Resin: Binding agents that provide structural integrity and, crucially, electrokinetic properties.

The Power of Zeta Potential

One of the defining features of the Micro-Media® series is the incorporation of a positive charge, known as Zeta Potential. Many contaminants, such as bacteria, haze colloids, and sub-micron particles, carry a natural negative charge.

Through the modification of the wet strength resin, Micro-Media® sheets exhibit a net positive charge. This acts like a magnet within the filter matrix, adsorbing negatively charged particles that are purely too small to be mechanically strained by the pores. This electrokinetic adsorption significantly improves retention efficiency compared to mechanical straining alone.

Product Series Breakdown

ErtelAlsop offers distinct formulations within the Micro-Media® family to suit specific process needs, from heavy industrial clarification to ultra-pure pharmaceutical processing.

Series Composition Key Applications
Standard Micro-Media® Cellulose, Perlite/DE, Wet Strength Resin General clarification, Food & Beverage, Chemicals, Utilities.
Micro-Media® XL Cellulose + Celpure® (High Purity DE) Critical pharma, high-purity chemicals. Offers extremely low extractables.
Micro-Media® L High Purity Cellulose (Low Beta-Glucan) Blood fractionation, products sensitive to “false pos” LAL tests.
Micro-Media® PXL Double Layer Complex High solids loading, pre-filtration, cell harvesting.

Technical Specifications

Selecting the right grade is critical for balancing flow rate with retention. Below is a guide to the nominal retention ratings and expected flow performance for the Diatomaceous Earth (DE) grades.

Retention Ratings & Flow Performance

Grade Name Micron Rating (Nominal) Approx. Flow Rate (Gal/ft²/hr)*
M-104 10.0 µm 1500
M-404 5.0 µm 730
M-454 2.5 µm 420
M-504 1.0 µm 200
M-504T 0.8 µm 120
M-704 0.45 µm 90
M-854 0.3 µm 40
M-954 0.25 µm 25

Key Applications

Micro-Media® filter sheets are listed in the CFR as generally recognized as safe for food contact (21 CFR 176.170), making them highly versatile.

  • Craft Beverage: Used extensively for beer haze reduction, wine polishing, and distilled spirits filtration to ensure shelf stability and clarity.
  • Biopharmaceuticals: The XL and L series are critical for upstream bioprocessing, protecting downstream membrane filters, and clarifying cell cultures without introducing beta-glucans.
  • Flavor & Fragrance: Excellent for removing fine particulate haze that settles in essential oils and essences over time.
